The Hampshire Sheep acquired their name from the County of
Hampshire in England. The breed evolved from the mingling of different breeds which co-existed along the county borders. The Hampshire's traits make them productive sheep with emphasis put on multiple births, ADG of lambs, face covering, refinement about the head and shoulders, muscling and freedom from unsoundness. Hampshire's are noted for their rapid growth and efficient feed conversion. They are a large, open faced, active sheep with a mild disposition. The wool is white with mature ewes averaging a 6 to 10 lb fleece.
